Welcome to my website – really great you spend some time here!

My name is Jan Willem Roks – I live in the southwest of the Netherlands.

Next to my work as a technology advisor at Microsoft, I have a deep love for radio. Not the noisy deejays with their simplistic sidekicks - no, I love the art of radio: creating images from sounds.

Travel is one of my other joys in life - with a special interest in China.

Work

Since 2016 I work for Microsoft as a technology advisor in the area of Data Security & Compliance. Technologies involved range from Microsoft Information Protection to Records Management and from Insider Risk Management to eDiscovery

Before Microsoft, I had several Workplace Architecture roles at Login Consultants, Capgemini and Eneco. At Eneco, I was involved in the introduction of Office 365 as a launching customer.

Radio

I have a deep love for radio. Not music radio (Spotify will easily replace this for me), but the art of radio: creating images from sounds.

Dutch radio has a rich history of innovative, creative and refreshing radio shows. Some of the best include:

Het Gebouw (1984-1993)
a weekly radioshow from 07:00 to 16:30, covering news, arts & culture, music, documentaries, investigative journalism: Collectie Het Gebouw

Pandemonium (80s)
broadcasted live from Café Eik en Linde in Amsterdam. It was a show in recital art, presenting famous Dutch writers reading from their own materials: Collectie Pandemonium

Ronflonflon met Jacques Plafond (1984 to 1991)
A radio show characterized by chaos. Presenter Jacques Plafond frequently interrupted his guests and the obligatory news readers, and cut off records if he didn't like them. The show used over a 100 jingles and was notable also for its many puns and linguistic jokes, some of which have crept into the Dutch language. For example, Plafond invented and consistently used his own second person singular pronoun "joe", an in-between version of the two possible pronouns in Dutch, "je" (informal) and "u" (formal).: Ronflonflon met Jacques Plafond

Olivetti ET Personal 55

Even in a world of digital transformation I still enjoy using my Olivetti electronic typewriter. The beautiful Olivetti ET Personal 55 has been designed in 1985-86 by Mario Bellini.
